This package is chock full of famous places to visit! Travel to the Shire in Matamata and join a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie set – walk among the gardens, get that selfie in a hobbit hole and live the dream. Your guide will escort you around the set, showing you the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made.
Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep farm where the set is located, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did. Journey through the unequivocal beauty of the land, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. After your tour, you can rest your feet in the cosy Green Dragon Inn where they serve fine ales and hearty food. Tours depart daily from 9am until 3:30pm
The Legendary Agrodome Farm Show
Back in Rotorua, take a seat at the legendary Agrodome Farm Show. Meet a real kiwi farmer and his 19 different breeds of sheep from around New Zealand and the world. Watch working dogs show their herding skills, participate in a live sheep auction, coo over the baby lambs getting a feed and see a cow being milked the old fashion way. After the show, watch the strong-eyed cattle dog manoeuvre sheep through obstacles in the field.
Your Farm Show ticket also gives you access to the baby animal nursery where you can get cuddles from adorable farm animals. The Dog & Whistle is a great little shop inside the show area where you can get that cuddly sheep of your own to take home. Shows are at 9.30am, 11am and 2.30pm every day.
The World Famous Geyser
Te Puia is the home to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, and the world famous Pohutu geyser. Go also get the opportunity to see live kiwi and boiling mud pools (not together 😉 Jump on a guided tour and learn about the history, stories and insights into this unique corner of the world. Guided tours run on the hour every hour from 9am to 5pm.
The park has plenty to experience with 60 hectares of the geothermal valley to explore. There are beautiful bush paths to wander down and a model Pre-European Maori Village and sacred Marae to discover, giving you a rare glimpse into how Māori people lived prior to European settlement.
At the carving school, see traditional Māori carving and weaving performed before your eyes, including wood, stone & bone carvings as well flax-weaving.
