This product is not currently available since Covid19. It is currently closed until further notice.

Join a guided tour through Whakarewarewa Village which is where the survivors of the Mt Tarawera eruption went to and where many of their descendants live today. Discover their unique lifestyle and traditions utilising the landscape of erupting geothermal activity, hot thermal springs and bubbling hot pools and then be entertained by Te Pakira Performance group in song and dance at the twice daily Maori Cultural Performance.

For lunch enjoy a Hangi meal. Hangi simply means “food cooked in the ground or an earth oven”.  Using the gift of the geothermal activity when the ground gives way, a box is made above the newly created vent and a lid is placed on top.  Food is then placed inside the box to steam and cook the food – this type of hangi is traditional within the village but not to Maori in general.

The hangi meal includes chicken, corned silverside (Beef), potato, kumara (sweet potato), pumpkin or carrots (upon availability), bread stuffing, cabbage, corn on the cob and gravy followed by the world famous Whakarewarewa dessert – Steamed Pudding, fruit salad, cream and custard, with self-serve tea, coffee and water also available.
