Whakarewarewa The Living Thermal Village & Hangi Pie Experience

Join a guided tour through Whakarewarewa Village to see how the people live utilising the landscape of erupting geothermal activity and then watch an awe-inspiring Maori cultural performance. Afterwards delight your tastebuds with a delicious hangi pie cooked traditionally in geothermal steam for lunch.

Join a guided tour through Whakarewarewa Village which is where the survivors of the Mt Tarawera eruption went to and where many of their descendants live today.


Discover their unique lifestyle and traditions utilising the landscape of erupting geothermal activity, hot thermal springs and bubbling hot pools and then be entertained by Te Pakira Performance group in song and dance at the twice daily Maori Cultural Performance.


Traditional Hangi Pie:

For lunch enjoy a Hangi Pie which includes chicken, corned silverside (beef), potato, kumara (sweet potato), carrots, bread stuffing and gravy encased in golden puff pastry – corn on the cob and a side of green salad, all cooked in the geothermal steam and hot springs. Dessert is the world famous Whakarewarewa steam pudding with fruit salad, custard & cream. Tea, coffee & water are also included.

  • Opening hours Daily (except for Christmas Day) 8.30am to 5pm.
  • Guided tours on the hour from 9.00am with last tour at 4pm.
  • Concert times are 11.15am and 2pm.
